An incontrovertible and renowned figure of the country’s history. The separatist leader Pouvanaa A Oopa, who was born in Huahine on the 10th of May 1895, has been a deputy between 1949 and 1958 and then senator from 1971 to 1977. His was the first who raised the voice to denounce pettiness and abuses of the colonial system. He endured jail and exile and died a few months before the triumph of his ideas, at the vote for the status of July 1977, which conferred autonomy to French Polynesia. This bust has been made by a sculptor from the Franche-Comté (France), Georges Oudot, who has also realized many busts of famous French politicians.
