Who remember this piece of history? Well, let's recap or discover it. After a famous call for from the general de Gaulle in June the 18th 1940 from London, Tahiti became the first French colony to rally to the Free France. During the Second World War, Polynesians volunteers distinguished themselves in Africa, more especially during the glorious battle of Bir-Hakeim. The general de Gaulle, who came twice in Papeete in 1956 and 1966, remains very popular. His monument represents two Polynesian canoe bows forming in their centre a Lorraine cross that symbolizes free France.
