C'est un décret du 20 mai 1890 qui crée la commune de Papeete, en considération de " l'importance de la ville, principal centre commercial des archipels environnants dont la population s'élève à 3.500 habitants jouissant presque tous de la qualité de Français". Pour fêter son centenaire, Papeete se dote d’une nouvelle mairie digne de la capitale de la Polynésie française pour abriter dignement le bureau du maire et les nombreux services de la mairie. Son style s’inspire fortement de l’ancien Palais de la reine, qui était un exemple de l’architecture coloniale du XIXème.

Papeete’s town hall
The decree of May the 20th, 1890 created the town of Papeete, by taking into account the “importance of the town, main commercial center of the surrounding archipelagos which population amounted to 3.500 inhabitants nearly all enjoying the quality of French”. To celebrate its century, Papeete gives itself a new town hall that worthy French Polynesia’s capital and to shelter fittingly the mayor’s office and the other town hall’s services. Its style is obviously based on the former Queen’s palace which was an example of the 19th colonial architecture.
