A public square that remains for a long time a symbol of joy and cheerfulness. From the beginning of the colonial era Tarahoi was considered as the political centre of Papeete and the place of residence for governors. Formerly a bandstand existed on the governor's square (the public square Tarahoi). In 1878 it has been settled by the governor Planche and every Thursday night it attracted a crowd that come to listen to the brass band. Until 1966 on the lawn, in front of the former residence, there were singing and dancing contests that were the main attraction of the 14th of July celebration.
