The 28th of June 2000 the previous president of French Polynesia, Gaston Flosse, inaugurated the new premises of the presidential palace at the place where was the Broche barrack.

The military district was named Broche in memory of the first chief of the Pacific battalion who were killed in Bir-Hakein. The conservation of the colonial military architectural principles of the XIX century and the adaptation of it to the modern comfort demands were the main concerns in this reconstruction.

This building shelters the President of French Polynesia’s government, who is elected by the 57 representatives of the Assembly
